Welcome to Positive-Songs.com!
My Name is Mark Shepard and I am a Singer/Songwriter. I accompany myself on guitar, piano and all kinds of huge drums I’ve carved out of trees. I also incorporate overtone singing, throat whistling and didgeridoo into my music and performances.
If you’re considering booking me you might want to read this page carefully.
“Songs can be agents of healing and hope.
Songs can help us get through the stuff in our lives that deeply hurts or challenges us.
To get a positive song stuck in your head that continues to “loop” without your conscious awareness does a lot to replace the toxic self talk most of us have internalized.” – Mark Shepard, Singer Songwriter
Since 1976 I have been on an incredible journey of spiritual awakening, self discovery and healing.
I thought my purpose was to write songs and share them with people. It seemed pretty simple. But every time I attempted this I met with innumerable, seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
It appeared that every avenue open to me was somehow blocked. My songs were “too Rock” for the folk clubs, not “Jesus-ey” enough for the the contemporary Christian folks, “too acoustic” for the rockers, “too lyric driven” for the new age crowd….
Too this. Too that.
Eventually I just quit.
Eventually I took up painting because paintings didn’t have to be “performed”.
At one point I considered recording all my songs and then ending my life so I could at least stop the pain of not being able to perform but leave behind my songs for people to listen to after I was gone…
Luckily, the pain motivated me to start working on myself instead.
I began to study energy healing and every self help book or metaphysical idea that seemed to offer even a tiny glimpse of an answer or a solution.
The music for me was what I now call “The purpose problem”, the motivating pain that starts each of us who are willing, on the journey of personal transformation, empowerment and healing.
In my quest for a resolution to the personal “stuff” that was “stopping” me. I studied Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Time Line Therapy(tm) Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or “Meridian Tapping) and more.
I made progress. I started feeling joyful and empowered most of the time.
I was increasingly using my music:

- In my NLP Trainings http://ModernJedi.com
- In my online courses http://CrushAnxiety.com
- In my Bullying Prevention Programs http://BullyingPreventionNow.com
I also wrote the lyrics and music for two stage plays for young people: “Letters To Daddy” and “Beautyfull” which were infused with the messages of empowerment and self realization that have led me out of despair. They were presented at the New York Musical Theater Festival in 2009 and 2010. A song from “Letters To Daddy” was used for a video that has been viewed over a quarter of a million times. And now… in my 2nd half century… I’m ready to “fulfill my mission”.
I’m ready to share my songs with people who “get” that songs can be agents of healing and hope. Songs can help us get through the stuff in our lives that deeply hurts or challenges us. To get a positive song stuck in your head that continues to “loop” without your conscious awareness does a lot to replace the toxic self talk most of us have internalized.
So you need to be aware that my songs, while often entertaining, are more than entertainment. You need to be open to hearing them in their dressed up “produced” Band versions or their “stripped down” solo acoustic versions.
Often I find myself presenting my songs in houses of worship.
If you’re considering having me do a concert or program for your church or synagogue, youth ministry or fund raiser you may want to be aware of where I’m coming from theologically.
My background is Christian ( I grew up Presbyterian) and there are many archetypal symbols in my songs from the Judeo-Christian tradition. I majored in comparative religions in college. I am an active member in the Unity Church of Albany which is a “universal” Christian tradition inspired by the “new thought” movement.
I am also deeply influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, The Ancient Toltecs of Mexico, Sufi poets like Rumi and Hafiz, Nature based Shamanic practices from Siberia to Africa to Native America and the Baha’i Faith. If your organization practices openess and tolerance to diverse expressions of God by many names, then I’m your guy.
If not, that’s okay too. There are other musicians who are probably a better match for you.
At this point in my life I can no longer attempt to be anyone other than my authentic self. If I preach anything, it’s multi-cultural tolerance, celebrating diversity, spiritual openess, and one-ness.
